Glaucoma Treatments

There is no treatment for glaucoma. However, there are two main types of treatments intended to lower intraocular pressure, a modifiable risk factor for glaucoma: medication and surgery.

Open-angle glaucoma treatment often starts with prescription eye drops to help lower IOP. Your doctor may prescribe a single type of eye drops or a combination of types. You may need more than one medication to keep your eye pressure low enough. Your doctor may change a medication if it causes side effects. If eye drops do not lower intraocular pressure enough, your doctor may prescribe surgery, but this doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t have to take eye drops any more, and surgery may need to be repeated. While surgery can lower eye pressure, it cannot restore lost vision.

Medication

There is no treatment for glaucoma. High intraocular pressure (IOP) is the only treatable risk factor for glaucoma. The most common type of IOP-lowering medications are prescription eye drops. Some work by helping fluid drain better, others by decreasing the amount of fluid made by the eye, and some do both. Regardless of which drop(s) your doctor prescribes, it’s important to take them exactly as your doctor instructed.

Surgery

Depending upon your situation and the seriousness of the disease, laser surgery and surgery may be used to help prevent additional damage. Dr. Alborzian is one of the very few San Diego ophthalmologist with the training to perform Canaloplasty (a new, highly effective, non-invasive surgerical technique for the treatment of Glaucoma)

Canaloplasty and Glaucoma

Canaloplasty is an advanced, non-penetrating, new surgical procedure designed to enhance and restore the eye’s natural drainage system to provide sustained reduction of IOP (eye pressure). Many eye surgeons and physicians have adopted Canaloplasty because it utilizes breakthrough microcatheter technology in a simple and minimally invasive procedure designed to reduce eye pressure, unlike the older procedures it is supplanting.
